A mothers Loneliness

I am lying in bed wondering when the next feed will be.  It is usually around this time so it feels almost pointless to go to sleep before he wakes.  It's in these moments I dare to let my thoughts loose.  The ones I have been too busy all day with my baby to listen to.  It's in these moments I hold back the tears and try to push the welling grief down.  I am led right next to my husband, he is sleeping, and although I could just put my hand out and touch him - he feels further away than ever. I am lying here knowing I am lonelier than ever. My baby is asleep in the adjoining room, he has a cold and I can hear his nose whistling as he sleeps soundly.  In that room is my whole heart, my reason for going on, my reason for living. I have never had many friends, I came from a military family so we moved so many times friendships were fleeting and even in my adult life I have also remained nomadic! Maybe it's a learnt behaviour, not holding onto friendships because I always le

7 ways to check if you have a good baby

As a new mum amongst all the cooing and admiration you will be asked 'Is he/she a good Baby?'. In order to help you determine, if indeed your baby is good, I have put together a list that may help!
  1. Was your baby less than 2ft tall (approx 70cm) at birth? If yes then you very likely have a good baby. Babies are generally small humans and so this is a good indicator. Incidently the longest baby recorded in the Guinness world records was 71cm and born in America.
  2. Can your newborn baby speak in full sentences? No - then you have a good Baby! Who wants a newborn shouting 'Mummy give me your boob immediately!' in the middle of a crowded supermarket. Most good babies do this in a code form which consists of crying noises - in time mummy will know what baby is asking for while the wider public will not!
  3. Does your baby produce plenty of wet and dirty nappies? Yes - then your baby is nailing this newborn malarkey! And if the occasional nappy explosion occurs all up their backs all the better! Lots of poo and stained onsies is a must!
  4. Is your new born as mobile as an upturned tortoise? If your baby cannot move from A to B without being carried by a larger human this too is a good baby doing their thing perfectly.
  5. Does your baby sleep through? This is a question you will be asked and is what everyone means by 'Good' so answer 'oh my baby is so good' with confidence if they spend some of the day and/or night awake and some of it asleep. If your baby wakes every 2 hours through the night - then this baby has got being a good baby down to a tee. If your baby sleeps through the night early on then this baby also is doing great and any variation on the two is also perfect. Babies wake in the night because they are hungry, wanting comfort or are just confused about day and night - they all sleep through eventually!
  6. Does your baby cry (sometimes a lot!)? If yes then your baby has mastered good communication. It's our jobs to try and understand it! Check out NHS info on how to soothe a crying baby (they put it there because crying is totlly normal!)
  7. Does your new born like to be close to it's parents? Have you experienced the e
yes opening instantly as you place a sleeping baby in its crib? The only want my mummy crying when you desperately need a wee or just 5 mins of you time? Well then you have a good Baby! Congratulations!
I am really not sure how a baby could be bad at being a small human with limited communication and basic needs! But if you do indeed have a bad baby - a large human which doesn't cry or need carrying about check it is indeed a baby and not the husband (it can be easy to confuse the two sometimes!

Motherhood and Depression: The fight of my Life

Today I woke up and for a moment I lay still staring at the ceiling and forced myself to listen to my breath.  I lay there and felt my chest rise and fall as I breathed.  It took all my will power to keep my focus on my breath, a mindfulness technique I have been taught.  I did this for maybe 30 seconds maybe a minute as my husband got up to the baby.  I was lying there trying to keep my focus off the one thing that has dominated my thoughts recently.  The dark, dismal feelings that have clawed their way into my life that bring with them the thoughts that I just can’t go on anymore.  These thoughts bring with them tears and heartbreak and they make living a normal life more and more difficult. My bipolar disorder has made me prone to depression.  It is a life long battle, but as my husband carries my beautiful son into our room that battle has to be put on hold; a momentary truce.  He is my world, the reason my heart beats and despite my turmoil he is not going to see me cry.  I take

The unexpected guilt of Motherhood

There are a lot of emotions that I expected to feel when I became a mum. Happiness, love, joy, excitement, fear but one that I didn't anticipate feeling all the time is guilt.  Guilt appears to be the backdrop of every day life for me now. I feel guilty as a wife, a friend, sister, daughter and as a mother. I am unable to seem to get through a day without feeling this emotion in something I have done or in some cases not done. As a wife, I constantly feel like I am falling short of the mark.  Not that my husband has ever suggested it! No this is my own  self evaliation to blame here! The house is a mess, the washing basket is full or the washing in the machine is still in there 2 days later! Its the feeling of inadequecy because I am not earning, that I don't want to go back to work because my world now is a tiny little human we created but financial pressures are growing regardless. Guilt that I am exhausted, all the time!  I feel bad that I haven't got the energy or wil
